A fresh take on a classic experiment makes no progress in unifying quantum mechanics and relativity. If you ever want to get your head around the riddle that is quantum mechanics, look no further than the double-slit experiment. This shows, with perfect simplicity, how just watching a wave or a particle can change its behaviour. The idea is so unpalatable to physicists that they have spent decades trying to find new ways to test it. The latest such attempt, by physicists in Europe and Canada, used a three-slit version but quantum mechanics won out again. In the standard double-slit...

US President Barack Obama has ordered a tripling of manpower in coastal areas where oil has washed ashore or threatens to within 24 hours. Speaking on a tour of oil-hit areas, Mr Obama said the US would "do whatever it takes" to help people whose lives had been affected by the disaster. He said the outcome of the "top kill" procedure to seal the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico was not yet known. But scientists were working on a back up plan in case it failed, he said. Earlier, BP's chief executive Tony Hayward said the outcome of...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate voted Thursday to triple foreign aid to Pakistan, with lawmakers saying the legislation could change the crisis-driven nature of U.S.-Pakistan relations and create ties based more on long-term interests. The Senate voted by voice to approve the measure that approves $1.5 billion a year over the next five years for democratic, economic and social development assistance. The measure, a result of House-Senate negotiations, could be passed in the House as early as Friday, sending it to President Barack Obama for his signature.

UNITED NATIONS -- An international panel of scientists presented the United Nations with a sweeping, detailed plan on Tuesday to combat climate change -- a challenge, it said, "to which civilization must rise." Failure would produce a turbulent 21st century of weather extremes, spreading drought and disease, expanding oceans and displaced coastal populations, it said. "The increasing numbers of environmental refugees as sea levels rise and storm surges increase will be in the tens of millions," panel co-chair Rosina Bierbaum, a University of Michigan ecologist, told reporters. After a two-year study, the 18-member group, representing 11 nations, offered scores of...

The detailed picture that emerged Friday about events that led to bandits shooting and killing three Central American illegal entrants in northwest Tucson provides a glimpse into the violent underbelly of human trafficking in Arizona where people are viewed as commodities. Authorities have not yet released the nationally, age or names of the victims. Between 4:30-5 a.m., a Dodge pickup stolen out of Phoenix was driving north across the Tohono O'dham Reservation with...

KUT, Iraq, Dec. 9, 2005 With its 9,800-foot runway, one of Saddam Hussein's premier air bases was in Kut, Iraq, near the Tigris River midway between Baghdad and Kuwait. Today, the coalition defense team has commandeered the base's strategic position. The U.S. Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence contracted with ECC International a year ago to build an Iraqi police cadet academy at Kut. With Iraq's training needs critical to the U.S. mission's eventual completion, the site has morphed into a triple training facility. Recruits for the Department of Border Enforcement have now begun training at Kut, as have...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (July 26) - Last month, Penn State University officials learned something about professor Paul Krueger that wasn't on his resume - he is on parole for a triple murder committed in Texas nearly 40 years ago. The university knew nothing about Krueger's conviction until late last month, when the Pennsylvania Bureau of Probation and Parole contacted the university, spokesman Bill Mahon said Friday. "We're in shock to find out some of the details, and we're still looking into it," Mahon said. "We've never had a situation like this before." Mahon said the university doesn't require prospective faculty...
