Thousands of spectators and surfers are flocking to Hawaii's beaches to see the biggest waves in years crash ashore. Heavy traffic backed up for miles yesterday along roads leading to Oahu's North Shore. Some of the world's most daring surfers took on the powerful and dangerous waves, which forecasters say could reach heights of 50ft (15 metres) by tomorrow. The surf grew so large that a few beaches on Oahu and Maui were closed because lifeguards feared inexperienced sightseers could drown, according to state officials. SUNSET BEACH (HawaiiNewsNow) - It could be the biggest surf Hawaii has seen in the past 40 years. Although the surf calmed down a bit on Sunday, some North Shore of Oahu residents prepared for the worst. Sunset Beach pumped up the hundreds who came to see the big wave spectacular. "We saw that they were big on Surf Net News and thought we'd check it out," Ewa Beach resident Scott Brown said. On Sunday, waves were around 15 feet. But on Monday, they're predicted to be as tall as 50 feet. "This looks to be a very, very large...

Carrying the wreath is the current head of the organization, Capt. Butch Arbin, who is flanked by Craig's son, Robert Craig, and grandson, Christopher Craig. (Above) Sean Williams pushes a surf board, carrying the wreath and the ashes of Capt. Craig, toward a Coast Guard boat, which released the wreath farther from the shore.
